Travel | Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Mount Rushmore National Memorial was covered in fog when I first arrived. Thankfully, after a few patient hours, the fog lifted and I was able to see and photograph the four presidents with blue skies.

Recommended Hikes

  • Presidential Trail - this paved trail is a loop from the visitor overlook area, down to the base of Mount Rushmore. If you are lucky, you may see a mountain goat.

  • Black Hills National Forest - as you drive through the national forest to reach the memorial, you may find yourself tempted to ditch your vehicle and begin exploring.

Nearby Attractions

I am sad to say I drove by all these nearby attractions. Having spent more time at the park than anticipated, I needed to push forward with a full day of driving across the state. I do, however, plan to go back to each in the future.

  • Badlands National Park - located east of Mount Rushmore, this national park is unique and breathtaking. I have been once, many years ago.

  • Devils Tower National Monument - I saw this Wyoming national monument from the road, in the pouring rain. I still wish I would have taken a detour for a closer look.

  • Jewel Cave National Monument - located west of Custer, South Dakota this cave is the world's third longest cave.

  • Wind Cave National Park - this national park is located south of Mount Rushmore and is approximately a 1.5 hour drive.
