Travel | New River Gorge National River

While heading south from Pennsylvania, I began to recognize the road I was traveling on. Remembering the New River Gorge National River visitor center was approaching, I became excited.

One - my legs needed some stretching.

Two - a surprise national park unit visit.

This was my second visit to the bridge and park, both in the late morning hours. Hopefully I will find myself in the area for a few sunrise or sunset photographs, soon.

Hiking and Exploring

• Camping - there are eight camping locations; seven primitive.

• Grand View - formerly a state park, offering a spectacular view of the New River. This area also has five hiking trails.

• New River Gorge Bridge - the longest steel span bridge in the western hemisphere and the third largest bridge in the United States. Great access points include the Canyon Rim Visitor Center and Fayette Station Road.

• Nuttallburg - the remains of an old mining town.

• Prince - a small town along the New River, at the bottom of the gorge.

• Sandstone Falls - the largest waterfall on the New River, spanning 1,500 feet with 10 to 25 foot drops. Click here for directions to the falls.
